Privacy

Eighth Billion has no accounts and no server-side user data. Your lives are stored in your own browser and are never uploaded. There is no advertising tracker and no session recording.

The short version

There is no sign-up, no login, and no profile.

Finished lives are stored in this browser's IndexedDB. Nothing else keeps a copy.

There is no advertising network, no cross-site tracker, and no session recording.

A transfer link carries a life in the part of the URL after the #. Browsers never send that part to a server.

What is stored, and where

Finished lives — up to ten, in this browser's IndexedDB. Removing them here removes them everywhere, because there is no other copy.

Settings — language, theme, whether decisions run automatically, and whether you have seen the content notice. Stored in this browser's localStorage.

Nothing else. There is no analytics profile, no cookie that identifies you, and no server database of players.

What the server sees

Like any website, the server receives the request for a page: the URL, the browser's user agent, and the IP address. These appear in ordinary server logs, which exist to keep the site running and are not joined to any player record, because there is none to join them to.

Analytics

Page views and a short list of product events are counted with a self-hosted, cookieless Plausible instance: CTA clicks, a birth being drawn, a life beginning, a life completing (age in decades only), and share actions. No event carries a country, a name, a seed or anything you type. No cookie and no identifier are set, and nothing follows you across sites. Add ?notrack=1 to any address to stop counting in this browser.

Transfer links

A transfer link contains the life itself — its seed, its birth, and the list of choices — in the URL fragment after the #. The fragment is not sent to the server, is not in the referrer sent to other sites, and is not logged. Anyone you send the link to can read the life; it contains no personal data about you, only a simulation.

Children and the content notice

The simulation shows deaths, including deaths of children, because the data records them. A content notice appears on first visit and can be dismissed. If the subject matter is not appropriate for a younger reader, use the classroom mode, which softens the telling without changing the simulation.

Your choices

Remove a life from the shelf at any time; the copy in the browser is deleted immediately.

Clear the site's storage in your browser to remove everything this site has saved.

There is no account to delete, because there is no account.

Questions

Write to the address on the about page. Because there is no player database, we usually cannot tell you anything about your own use of the site — there is nothing on our side to look up.

Now live one

The odds on this page describe populations. The game draws one birth and plays that life forward, year by year, from the same tables.
