What this service is

A browser-based simulation. It draws a birth from published national statistics and steps a life forward using that country's life table. It is entertainment and education, not a forecasting service.

What it is not

Not a prediction of anyone's life, health, or lifespan.

Not medical, financial, legal, or life advice.

Not affiliated with, endorsed by, or produced by the United Nations, the World Bank, or WHO.

Not a source of individual-level data. Every figure is a population statistic.

Data and attribution

Source data is used under its publishers' licences and attributed on every page that displays a figure. Figures derived by Eighth Billion are published under CC BY 4.0. Reuse of our derived dataset requires attribution to Eighth Billion; reuse of the source data requires attribution to its publisher as stated on the data page.

Content and code

The text, the visual design, and the simulation code are ours. The framework libraries are used under their own open-source licences, listed in the notice file. Nothing from another life-simulation site is reproduced here.

Acceptable use

Do not present a simulated record as a real person's life or as a forecast about a real person. Do not use the site to harass anyone. Do not attempt to disrupt the service or to scrape it in a way that degrades it for others; the data is available as a download precisely so that scraping is unnecessary.

No warranty

The service is provided without warranty of any kind. Published demographic data is itself an estimate, and the simulation adds modelling assumptions on top of it. We describe those assumptions; we cannot guarantee that any figure is free of error.

Liability

To the extent permitted by law, we are not liable for any loss arising from use of the site. Nothing here limits liability that cannot be limited by law.

Changes

These terms may change. A material change is recorded in the changelog with its date. Continuing to use the site after a change means accepting the new terms.

Governing law

These terms are governed by the law stated on the about page, without regard to conflict-of-law rules. (the laws of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region.)
